Safe and Sound Protocol for Nervous System Regulation
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a therapeutic listening intervention designed to support nervous system regulation, emotional resilience, and overall well-being. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, SSP is based on Polyvagal Theory, which explains how our autonomic nervous system responds to safety, connection, and threat.
How the Safe and Sound Protocol Works
The SSP is a specialized music-based intervention that uses specially filtered sound frequencies to stimulate the vagus nerve and promote regulation of the nervous system. By gradually introducing cues of safety through sound, SSP helps to retrain the nervous system to move out of chronic fight, flight, or freeze states and into a place of greater calm, connection, and resilience.
Who Can Benefit from SSP?
SSP has been used to support individuals with:
- Anxiety and chronic stress
- Trauma and PTSD
- Sensory sensitivities
- Autism spectrum disorder
- Emotional dysregulation
- Social engagement difficulties
A Gentle Approach to Healing
SSP is designed to be a gentle and gradual process, often integrated with other therapeutic approaches. By helping the nervous system feel safer, it enhances the ability to engage in relationships, therapy, and daily life with greater ease.
Understanding the nervous system is a key step toward healing. With the right tools, like SSP, we can foster greater self-regulation, emotional balance, and overall well-being.
I am a trained and certified provider of the SSP. This can be utilized either as a stand alone adjunct to your current therapy, integrated with therapy I provide, or utilized as a part of my coaching program offering.
